Devices

Nearly 60% of the mobile phones are now smartphones (EU28, end 2015).   And that number is going up rapidly !!  For 2018, forecasts expect a 80% penetration of smartphones…

It’s therefor not necessary to invest heavily in hardware : visitors bring their own device to access audio, video, images, texts…  We call that ‘BYOD’ (Bring Your Own Device).

PS : For the visitors without a smart device, we can of course rent or sell a set of locked visitor tablets.

Connexion

iBeakens are viewed by the visitor’s smartphone through the wireless internet (3G, 4G or Wifi).  iBeaken is built on HTML5, no custom app is needed because all the content comes over radio waves.

We recommend to invest in a good WIFI network rather than an app and devices you will need to replace every 2 years.  You can offer a helper app though for scanning QR codes or face and image recognition.

Besides WIFI, there are more fancy ways of connexion too : LIFI, infrared light or high frequency sound waves for example…

Triggers

A trigger is always needed to send the content to the visitor’s smartphone.  There are basically two groups of triggers : PUSH and PULL.

push pull

We like ‘PULL‘ triggers a lot, because they give the guest the opportunity to decide for himself whether he wants to access the content or not : “he/she pulls the content to the device”.

But in some cases ‘PUSH‘ triggers may be more appropriate : “you push the content (whether the guest wants it or not) to the phone”.

Both kind of triggers can be visible or invisible, each with their advantages and disadvantages :

Visible triggers :

  • iBeaken key pad pull
  • QR code, vQR code pull
  • acoustic QR pull
  • iBeaken image cluster pull
  • etc…

Invisible triggers :

  • NFC pull
  • image / face / object / space recognition pull
  • LIFI pull push
  • iBeacon/BLE push
  • GPS push
  • earth magnetism push
  • RFID push
  • etc…

Yes, it’s pretty complex, but the slideshow below explains which triggers iBeaken has tested and approved for museums and heritage sites :
